James ("Jim") Porter has spent more than 20 years working with distressed companies internationally and domestically, providing turnaround and restructuring services as well as litigation support to help maximize stakeholder value and client returns.
Mr. Porter is currently involved in the restructuring of Brookdale University Hospital & Medical Center where he is the Chief Financial Officer and manages various restructuring initiatives in conjunction with the Department of Health and the State of New York to stabilize and improve healthcare delivery in East Brooklyn.
Prior to joining ToneyKorf, Mr. Porter was a partner with Grant Thornton, where he led major restructurings in the Healthcare, Media and Leisure services industries. One of his most notable roles included serving as Treasurer of Saint Vincents Catholic Medical Centers during its bankruptcy, which was one of the largest bankruptcies in the healthcare industry. He also led the out of court restructuring of the U.S. National Whitewater Center.
While on secondment to the U.S. practice of KPMG from the U.K., the U.S. practice was acquired by Mesirow Financial. Electing to remain in the U.S. with Mesirow Financial, where he served as a Director, Mr. Porter worked on notable assignments such as providing litigation support for parties affected by the Enron Bankruptcy as well as a supply chain rationalization for a major mobile phone network. While in the U.K. at KPMG, Mr. Porter held management positions of several manufacturing and telecom companies, including one of the U.K.’s oldest businesses, Yardley.
Mr. Porter is actively involved in the restructuring industry, with professional qualifications and memberships including:
- Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA)
- Joint Insolvency Examination Board (JIEB)
- Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor (CIRA)
- Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP)
- Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors, member
- Institute of Certified Accountants of England and Wales, member
- Turnaround Management Association, Carolinas chapter, Treasurer and member
Mr. Porter is also a past recipient of The M&A Advisor award 40 UNDER 40.
He holds Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University (U.K.).
Mr. Porter is active in his community serving on the Board of Directors of the U.S. National Whitewater Center as well as a number of community charity organizations including the “24 Hours of Booty” bicycle challenge in Charlotte, North Carolina for the fight against cancer and building houses with Habitat for Humanity.
