Mark E. Toney is a founding member and Senior Managing Director of ToneyKorf Partners, LLC.  With more than 37 years of experience, Mark is a senior executive who is focused on interim and crisis management, operational reorganizations, financial revitalizations, and corporate turnarounds.  He is results-driven, with a unique sense of vision and an emphasis on strategy, while maintaining a disciplined focus on execution and continuous improvement.  Mark is known for the successful execution of complex projects, including those relating to operational improvements and organizational assessments and realignments.  He is an adept negotiator with a proven ability to achieve effective solutions through positive working relationships with attorneys, lenders, Board of Directors, labor unions, Regulators, and other key parties.

Mark is nationally recognized as an accomplished leader in serving as senior management for organizations, both publicly traded, privately held, and not-for-profit, that are underperforming, in transition, or reorganizing.  He is also recognized for his balanced, independent, and creative thinking in difficult and complex situations. He has served in many roles as senior management, including Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”), Chief Restructuring Officer (“CRO”), and Chief Financial Officer. He has extensive experience with recruiting and leading executive management teams in difficult and challenging situations, including financial distress, loss or turnover of management, and other situations encountered by companies in transition.

As examples of Mark’s management roles, he currently serves as President, CEO, and CRO at an acute care community hospital where he assisted the Board in evaluating and implementing strategic options, including serving as lead negotiator with a large regional healthcare system and various stakeholders, as well as leading the system in its day-to-day operations while preparing the staff for the merger and integration into the acquiring system.  Post the transaction in June 2019, Mark and ToneyKorf staff are winding down the legal entities, including the organization’s captive insurance company.

Previously, he served as CEO of Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he successfully developed and led a strategy preventing the bankruptcy and closure of a vital organization.  Prior to that, he was CRO of Saint Vincents Catholic Medical Centers of New York (“SVCMC”). He was initially retained by the senior lender as an advisor.  However, by request of the Board of Directors of SVCMC and with support from the senior lender, Mark was subsequently hired as SVCMC’s crisis manager.  This high profile and complex restructuring was one of the largest Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganizations within the healthcare industry.

Prior to co-founding ToneyKorf Partners in 2012, Mark was the National Managing Partner of Grant Thornton’s Corporate Advisory & Restructuring Services practice, as well as leading the investment banking services practice of the firm.  Further, he was a Managing Director with AlixPartners, LLC, and a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.  Mark was a Vice President in an investment banking and private capital firm where he structured acquisitions, negotiated purchase and sale agreements, arranged acquisition financing, and conducted target acquisition analysis.

Mark holds a B.S. in Business Administration from West Virginia University and is a Certified Public Accountant.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Corporate Directors, Association for Corporate Growth, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the Turnaround Management Association. Mark is a frequent guest speaker on a variety of business, cultural, and public policy topics.

Giving back:  A core belief of mine is that we should live to help others. If we focus on others’ needs, I have found that mine are always met, and generally a multiple of whatever I think I give.  One can find much joy from giving and sharing with others. Life is short…Make it matter!

What I do outside of work:   They say “you can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy” and I am an example of that!  Despite a life on the road, when I do have downtime, I enjoy being with my family, working the land at my home in Maine, and pursuing too many hobbies without the necessary time. Some people meditate to find that calmness but for me nothing is more relaxing than looking at the waves of the ocean, riding through the countryside on a dirt road, or mowing the fields on my tractors.

Biggest indulgence:  One of my hobbies is baking, which stems from my passion for sweets.  My favorites include cookies, banana bread, banana pudding (yep, I like banana “anything”), and hummingbird cake, but I rarely find a bakery that doesn’t have something to enjoy.

They always send the A-team with a high level of trust and integrity.
Let's build a future together
